A Visual Observer (VO) is a critical safety position in professional drone operations. The VO supports the Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) by maintaining continuous visual line of sight (VLOS) with the aircraft, monitoring airspace and ground hazards, and providing real-time communication to ensure safe and compliant flight operations.
Career Development at Blacktail Aerial
At Blacktail Aerial, the Visual Observer role is also a pathway to becoming a certified drone pilot. This position provides hands-on exposure to real-world flight operations, safety planning, and FAA-compliant procedures.
Blacktail Aerial provides training and support for Visual Observers who wish to advance, including:
Operational flight training
FAA airspace and regulatory education
Mission planning and safety management
Preparation for the FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certification
Mentorship toward becoming a Remote Pilot in Command
This structured progression ensures that future pilots are trained with a strong safety foundation and real operational experience.
Why We Use Visual Observers
By incorporating trained Visual Observers and developing future pilots internally, Blacktail Aerial enhances situational awareness, reduces risk, and maintains the highest operational standards—especially in complex environments such as oil & gas, construction, utilities, and industrial sites. This approach results in safer flights, higher-quality data, and long-term value for our clients.
A FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot is a certified professional authorized to operate drones for commercial purposes. At Blacktail Aerial, our pilots conduct safe, compliant, and efficient flight operations while delivering high-quality aerial data, inspections, and documentation across industrial and commercial environments.
All pilots operate in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration Part 107, ensuring every mission meets federal safety and airspace requirements.
